A Word from Our Chair as We Mark Eighty Years

Eighty years ago, following the end of the world war, a group of visionary leaders made a bold and remarkably decision. They recognised that the wellbeing of people at work was not a luxury, it was a foundation of success. In 1946, Roffey Park Institute was established to support people in industry who were suffering from overwork, nervous strain, and the profound anxieties of post wartime Britain. Its purpose was simple and enduring: to help people flourish in their working lives so they can give their best to the world.

Eight decades on, that founding purpose has never felt more relevant today.
The world Roffey Park began in, has been transformed beyond recognition.

We have witnessed the dismantling of post-war economic agreements, the rise of globalisation, the Cold War and its end, the digital revolution, financial crises, a global pandemic, and the emergence of artificial intelligence reshaping the nature of work and society.

Political systems have evolved, and geopolitical certainties have shifted to a new multi polar reality.
The very contract between organisations and the people who work within them is being reimagined.

Through every chapter of this extraordinary eighty years, Roffey Park has remained a constant, adapting, evolving, and always returning to its core conviction: that when leaders, teams and organisations are developed well, real and lasting good is created in the world of work.

From our first residential programme in 1947, exploring how psychological principles could shape human relations in industry, to the bespoke leadership and organisational development work we deliver today across the UK, Ireland and internationally.

The thread running through everything we do, is our belief in the potential of every person, whatever their role.

We are proud to be a registered charity. Our work is not driven by shareholder return, it is driven by purpose. We exist to support leaders at every level, to strengthen teams, and to help organisations become places where people can genuinely thrive. That is as true today as it was in 1946.

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my deep gratitude to every member of the Roffey Park community past and present, to our clients and partners who have placed their trust in us, and to the staff and faculty who bring this institution to life every day. You are the reason this anniversary matters.

I speak not only as Chair, but as someone whose entire relationship with Roffey Park has shaped who I am. Over the course of my career I have been a participant, a client, a Trustee, and now Chair. At every stage, the personal and professional development I have experienced here has helped me both as a person and as a professional. For that, I will be eternally grateful.

Eighty years is a milestone worth celebrating. But more than anything, it is a reminder of what endures: a belief that work, at its best, is where human potential is realised. That is the Roffey Park mission. That remains our commitment today and for the future.

Roger Leek – Chair of the Board
