Leaders learn a great deal today about how to do leadership, but this only helps them so far.  The leader-follower dynamic is ultimately much more to do with how people perceive the leader, not just what they do. For example, leaders can spend lots of time thinking about next steps, what they and others haven’t done, what might have been done differently and so on. This draws attention to the past and the future but does not focus on the present, when key acts of leadership should happen. Through this lack of attention and intention in the present moment, the leader’s influence and impact is greatly limited.

At Roffey Park we believe that becoming a deeply impactful leader with authenticity and presence can only be achieved by developing our full range of intelligence, including that of our body as well as our mind.

Course Overview

Roffey Park’s Leading with Presence is an immensely practical programme which develops a variety of approaches to enhance authentic leadership presence, impact and effectiveness. These include mindfulness, gestalt, somatic and equine assisted learning.  It is a deliberately different and experiential programme that enables you to be an engaging leader who people will want to follow – increasing productivity as a result.

Listen to Sue Binks talk about authentic leadership with presence

  • Develop flexibility and adaptability, having a positive impact in a range of different situations
  • Have more confidence in managing performance and dealing with conflict
  • Have a greater inspirational and compelling leadership presence, which releases their potential to engage others.

Benefits for Leaders:

  • Build your presence, confidence and impact as a leader
  • Enhance your self-awareness and emotional intelligence in practical ways
  • Learn about the theory and approach of embodiment and understand how to apply this to improve leadership presence

  • Improve your confidence in handling the important conversations that are necessary in leadership

“The chance to ‘try out’ different leadership positions has made me more flexible in how I lead, in particular I am now more comfortable being directive when it is needed. My projects progress faster now, as I make decisions more quickly and confidently without over-consultation. I also have a clearer vision of how my work adds value to the company and the conviction in my voice when I speak of this is building more support for my projects.” Celia Clark, Learning Capability Manager, Oxford University Press.

“The course is structured to ensure that from moment one you slow down and reflect on who you are, where you are and the power of your presence. The three days gave me an insight into my leadership style, how my energy drives people and how being in the ‘here and now’ is a fantastic skill to be used in all walks of life.” Recent participant

“One participant had the experience of their horse just stopping and refusing to move. For this highly capable individual, the situation was frustrating and unexpected. But after being supported by the programme team and taking the time to centre himself, be clear on what he wanted to achieve and stay in the moment, he achieved his objective of getting the horse to move”. Leading with Presence – Programme Summary

Leading with Presence is a 4-day programme – a three-day residential followed by a follow-up day two months’ later.

Key features of the programme:

Highly practical and experiential
On this programme very little time is spent sitting and listening, as we apply the theory with a number of gentle, physical activities that get you practising immediately with the support of experienced facilitators.

Equine assisted learning
Leading with Presence includes a day’s learning experience with horses who are highly social animals that have no pre-conceptions about who you are, and no social filters.  This is delivered by a leading Equine learning facilitator and uses the responses of the horse to give unbiased feedback, and an opportunity to put in to practice the embodied techniques. What you get is immediate and powerful feedback like no other, and an opportunity to try something different in real time. Read our Equine Assisted Learning information for more details.

Embodiment theory and practice
The programme explores a number of approaches to enhance impact and presence.  These include mindfulness, gestalt and somatics.

Is this programme for me?

Leading with Presence is aimed at middle to senior managers who want to improve their leadership capability.  This programme is for you if:

  • You are looking for a leadership training programme with an edge, one that you will stretch you and take you outside of your comfort zone
  • You are a middle manager who aspires to move into a more senior role by developing their leadership capability
  • You are a senior leader responsible for leading change in your organisation and want to improve your impact and influence to deliver the results needed
  • You are an OD professional or consultant who wants to develop an understanding of mindfulness, gestalt and somatics.

What will you be able to do at the end of the course?

Lead with greater clarity and impact
You’ll understand what matters to you as a leader and how, by being more present in yourself, you can be much more motivated to be your very best, more of the time.

Greater self-awareness and confidence
You’ll gain, and have practised, practical tools and techniques that you can use on a daily basis to improve your leadership effectiveness

Lead under pressure
Develop the skills and techniques to stay grounded under pressure so you are able to support, engage and inspire others to do the same.

Programme Outline

Leading with Presence is a two-part programme: part one takes place over three days with a one-day follow-up two months later. It is a practical, experiential programme which consists of:

Embodiment and Somatics
We introduce the theory and uncover why it is used and why/how it works.  Participants then apply this using gentle exercises to develop their practice.

Who are you as a leader?
Participants explore what leadership means for them in terms of their impact and purpose.  They then connect this with their programme learning goals which underpin the programme.

Equine Assisted Learning
Equine Assisted Learning takes place on the second day of the programme and participants apply their practised techniques from day one with the horse.  Participants quickly learn that this not a gimmick.  Horses are effectively living mirrors and if you’re not present and connected, you will not be leading – the horse will.  Participants consistently feedback that this element of the programme provides the most revealing and useful feedback than they’ve received before.

Final Day Review
The final day is an opportunity to share what impact developing your leadership presence has had so far and what areas you would most like some additional help with. It’s also an opportunity to think about refining and further developing the habits and practices which are the foundations of your continuing journey.

What you’ll get out of Leading with Presence

Leading with Presence attracts leaders who have taken part in a traditional leadership programme but want something different.  Participants leave Leading with Presence knowing how to be a leader and not just do leadership.  They have a great impact and inspire people to follow them.

At Roffey Park, our experts are here to get the best out of you so you can give the best back. Sign up today.
