 Globally Responsible Leadership

A culture of globally responsible leadership is created when CSR is fully embedded in the DNA of an organisation. We believe that in order to develop such a culture, CSR and organisational development practitioners need to work together.

Research by Human Resources magazine finds that 80% of HR professionals believe that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will become a more important part of their job within the next five years
and 35% believe CSR should fall within the HR function, while a survey of executives by McKinsey found that that 86% believe that their company does not do an adequate job of anticipating societal pressures.*

HR professionals often lament the fact they are not perceived to be strategic within their organisations. One way HR can make itself more strategic is by better understanding and embracing CSR – providing
crucial assistance to their Chief Executives who want to do more than pay lip service to CSR by embedding it within their organisational culture.

  • How do you change the way people make decisions throughout your organisation – from purely profit driven to a triple bottom line perspective?
  • How do you engage people throughout the organisation in CSR?
  • How can we develop the skills and qualities needed for leaders to be globally responsible in their decisions and actions?

Through a unique organisational change programme, set within an Action Research framework, Roffey Park is creating the opportunity for CSR, HR and OD professionals to work together to pursue answers
to these questions - and create truly globally responsible organisations.

  • Create organisational change that will begin to foster a culture of globally responsible leadership
  • Increase collaboration between HR /OD and CSR
  • Learn from change initiatives taken in other organisations
  • Build networks with change agents in other companies

Programme Outline

Our recommendation is that participants come from the CSR and HR/OD functions of their organisations, and each organisation is able to send two participants. Organisations will still benefit from one participant attending and we will discuss with you how best to participate in this way. The programme runs over an eight-month period, from April 2008 to December 2008, and has the following elements:

Residential modules - Four residential modules, each attended by up to two individuals from each participating organisation – these will serve to support planning, implementation and learning from the research, with the learning across participating organisations adding particular value.

Change project - Each participant will plan and carry out three cycles of action and reflection designed to develop a culture of globally responsible leadership. These can be connected to an existing work stream or project, or can be based on a new project created by participants. Participants will gather data based on their reflections, and other data that they define as being relevant to the actions they are taking.

Tailored Consultancy Support – This will be provided in the form of two days consultancy time from Roffey Park, which each organisation can utilise in the best way to support its project. Possibilities for the form that this could take include: running a tailored programme for senior managers on aspects of CSR, OD, HR or a combination of these; supporting the creation of a solid case for further work in this area in a particular participating organisation; individual coaching support for participants in undertaking their change project.

What is Action Research?

The philosophy of Action Research is that you cannot understand something fully until you try to change it. Through cycles of action and reflection, action researchers seek to create change in a specific domain, and then to reflect on the process of change that has been initiated. From this and with the support and challenge of others they can arrive at new actions that can be taken to further the change.

Action research does not examine or ask questions about causal relationships, and attempt to identify, for example, a link between CSR and financial performance. It asks questions that begin with ‘how’, for example, “How are we creating, building, fostering and sustaining a corporate culture of globally responsible leadership?” In this programme participants will learn to be action researchers in their organisations. They will plan and take actions to forward change in their organisations, and will bring back their progress and their reflections on their work. Participants will then receive support and challenge from their peers, to further their reflections, and to develop new actions for the next research cycle.

Roffey Park’s facilitators will work with the group, across four modules, to ensure rigour in this process. Additionally we will work with the participants so that their research can be written up and published
(with their permission and maintaining appropriate confidentiality), as a new contribution to both the fields of CSR and OD.
