A new research report by Roffey Park has been launched today which challenges the dominant views on learning and highlights the practical application of complexity theory in today’s organisations. Written by Sharon Varney, a research associate at Roffey Park, the report uncovers the secrets of successful practice, offering insights into what enables and inhibits learning and a model for HR development professionals to use to create the conditions for transformational learning.
Sharon Varney said: “Complexity is part of the fabric of our working lives. Many organisations try to reduce or control it and this simply isn’t possible. This research shows that it is not about tackling complexity, but more a case of understanding what it means for how we work to develop people and organisations”.
“The report does not attempt to simplify the complex, but to explore the real issues developers and managers face in complex organisations. It offers some practical insights into what enables and inhibits learning, raising issues about current thinking and practice on learning which is likely to be directly relevant to people in HR, Organisational Development (OD) and Learning and Development”.
The report comes in three parts. The first uncovers some of the influences on learning practice with a look at the underpinning theories of learning and complexity. The second part explores key themes arising from the research and touches on questions close to developers’ hearts such as, can we really make a difference? Part three presents some insights into what it all means and a useful framework for developers to consider their own practice.
